Report: insurance crime in 2024

32,000 – this is how many insurance crimes were detected by insurance companies last year. The number was 15% lower than in 2023. At the same time, the value of frauds increased to over PLN 675 million, while a year earlier it was PLN 452 million.

The value of detected frauds is growing because insurers are increasingly effectively detecting fraud. This is aided by progress in IT solutions, which enables insurance companies to use increasingly newer analytical tools. The development of artificial intelligence accelerates claim verification and fraud attempt detection. Thanks to new technologies, data analysis and cooperation with law enforcement agencies, insurers can identify suspicious claims faster and limit losses.

– We observe with satisfaction that insurance companies are increasingly actively fighting insurance crimes. Although fewer cases were detected than before, their total value increased. This is proof that the industry’s actions are becoming more effective. We are particularly pleased that companies are investing
in new technologies – for example in artificial intelligence and image analysis tools. An example of such a solution is the FOTO UFG system. It is precisely thanks to such innovations and consistency
in checking claims that fraud can be detected more effectively and a safer insurance market built for everyone – says Piotr Raubo, Chairman of the Commission for Combating Insurance Crime and Director of the Anti-Fraud Bureau, TUiR Warta S.A.

The value of crimes detected in 2024 in life insurance increased by 23% compared to 2023. The largest part, almost half of the value of crimes detected
in life insurance, were claims concerning deaths.

Compared to 2023, the value of crimes detected in property insurance increased most significantly, by as much as 54%. For years, crimes related to motor insurance have dominated among them – both in terms of number and value. Fraud
in claims from TPO and Auto Casco insurance together account for almost 65% of the number and over 65% of the value of all crimes in property insurance.

At the end of 2024, the insurance market gained a new tool allowing effective combating of crimes concerning motor insurance. The FOTO UFG system analyses photos of vehicle damage and parts used for repairs. The system’s operation is based on artificial intelligence and automatic image recognition technology. Its task is to detect the same or enlarged damage to individual elements reported to different insurers.

New tools created by the insurance market significantly increase the possibilities of detecting insurance crime and are becoming the main weapon in fighting fraud perpetrators.
