In 2024, the sum of premiums that Poles spend on health insurance increased by 35.3% – to PLN 2.3 billion. The number of insured increased year-on-year by 12.2% – Awareness of the need for prevention is growing – explains Dorota M. Fal, Management Board Advisor at the Polish Chamber of Insurance.
Private health insurance in 2024:
- 5.39 million – number of private health insurance users in Poland
- PLN 2.3 billion – gross premium written in health insurance
These data concern health insurance, i.e. those that offer healthcare services, not financial benefits. – The main scope of these insurances is basic or specialist outpatient healthcare, with access to diagnostic tests – explains Dorota M. Fal. She admits that the constantly growing popularity of private health policies is, among other things, the effect of problems with accessibility to the public healthcare system.
The Watch Health Care Foundation, which has been publishing its Barometer on the length of queues in healthcare since 2012, warns that the average waiting time for patients has increased to a record 4.2 months from 3.5 months a year ago.
Increasing healthcare expenditure is consumed mainly by wage increases for personnel and other costs of medical facilities. However, the needs of an ageing society are also growing and, which is actually a positive phenomenon, our awareness of the need for prevention.
– It would be good if the state recognised that private health insurance could be a good way to limit the effects of underfunding of the public healthcare sector – says Dorota M. Fal.
In forecasts for 2025, PIU predicts that the private health insurance market in Poland will gain even more importance. The reason will be increased social expectations and the desire to obtain faster and better healthcare. And private insurers will certainly adapt their offer to the growing needs of both individual clients and employers – The market offer is increasingly broad and adapted to needs and possibilities both in terms of benefit ranges and co-payment possibilities for policyholders – says the PIU expert.
